The Federal Government has postponed the resumption of primary and secondary schools across the country. Primary and Secondary schools were supposed to resume on September 22nd but they announced today that schools can resume October 13th.

Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, stated this when he briefed journalists after meeting with States Commissioners of Education, on the risk posed by the dreaded Ebola virus disease in the education sector.
The Minister said the change in the resumption date would ensure adequate preventive measures are put in place before the students report back to school.

One case of Ebola left in Nigeria - Health Minister

Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said today that Nigeria has been able to reduce the number of Ebola cases to just one.

At a press briefing held today August 26th in Abuja, Prof. Onyebuchi said only one patient out of the 13 confirmed cases in Nigeria is still at the Isolation center. He said five of those infected died while seven have successfully recovered and have been discharged. He also said two of the nurses who attended to Patrick Sawyer at the First Consultant hospital were discharged yesterday.

Here is what the minister said

"Of these thirteen, five, including the index case unfortunately did not survive the disease and are now late. However, seven of the infected persons were successfully managed at the Isolation ward in Lagos and have been discharged home.
"Two of treated patients, a male doctor and a female nurse were discharged yesterday evening, 25th August, 2014 having satisfied the criteria for discharge.
"I wish to reassure Nigerians and indeed the global community that the Government shall remain vigilant and will not relent as Government continues to work with her partners to ensure that the disease is kept out of the country. Thank you.

United sign Angel Di Maria for record fee

 Angel Di Maria
Manchester United is delighted to announce that Angel Di Maria has completed his transfer for a British record fee of £59.7million. Angel joins on a five-year contract.
Di Maria, 26, began his career at one of the most prolific youth academies in Argentinian football, Rosario Central. In 2007, he moved to Europe to play for Portuguese club Benfica, before signing for Real Madrid in 2010. The Argentina international has 52 caps for his national team, scoring 10 goals.
Angel Di Maria said: "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for.
"Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started."
Louis van Gaal said: "Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player. There is no doubting his immense natural talent.
"He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence. His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team."

Sunderland and Manchester United draw

image
Louis van Gaal is still looking for his first Premier League victory as manager of Manchester United following his side's 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Juan Mata put the visitors ahead against the run of play after 16 minutes before Jack Rodwell equalised with a bullet header on his home debut on the half-hour mark.
The back-three in Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation was tested throughout by Sunderland's quick counter-attacking play and United's midfield were completely over-run by Rodwell, Cattermole and Larsson.
Ashley Young was booked once again for diving in the second half as he threw himself theatrically up into the air when challenged by Wes Brown.
Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie failed to find their form for United, who had to settle for a point, although Sunderland felt they could have won the game themselves.

Usain Bolt breaks 100m indoor world record

image
The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt has broken the previous unofficial 100m indoor world record of 10.05 set by Namibian Frankie Fredericks in 1996.
Jamaican sprinter and Six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt broke 10 seconds for the first time this season when he won a 100m race under a closed roof at the National Stadium in Warsaw on Saturday.
The Jamaican clocked 9.98 seconds into a slight breeze at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in front of a 20,000 crowd on a new track laid down the side of the infield.
Bolt’s first Polish outing was his third race this season as he builds up to Thursday’s Diamond League meeting in Zurich and saw him set a new best time for the infrequently run 100 indoors.
Bolt anchored Jamaica to 4x100m gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month and last weekend won an exhibition race on Brazil’s Copacabana beach in a time of 10.06.
His nearest rival in Warsaw was fellow Jamaican Sheldon Mitchell, who ran 10.33, but in Zurich will face three sub-10 sprinters plus Britain’s European 200m champion Adam Gemili.
A statement from the organisers said Bolt’s coach, Glen Mills, was satisfied with the sprinter’s performances on his comeback from the foot injury which had delayed his start to the season, but “feels it is now time to shut it down while he is healthy and injury free with a view on his preparations for the 2015 season”.
The six-time Olympic champion, who will resume training in October, will be looking to retain his world 100m and 200m crowns at the World Championships in Beijing next year.

Manchester United close in on deal for Real Madrid’s Ángel di María

Ángel di María
Manchester United believe a deal for Real Madrid’s Ángel di María can be sealed after gaining encouragement from developments in recent days and are hopeful of signing the forward for a fee of up to €75m (£60m).
If the 26-year-old does become a United player he could be given the No7 shirt vacated by Antonio Valencia at the start of last season and which has been worn by George Best, David Beckham and Eric Cantona.
United had all but given up hope on landing the Argentinian after he began the summer on new manager Louis van Gaal’s A-list of targets but seemed to be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain.
Yet that transfer to the French capital collapsed as PSG were unable to meet Real’s asking price, thought to have been £50m. With the PSG president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, declaring the fee “too expensive”, United revived their interest in Di María this month, despite the French champions’ desire to sign the Argentinian on a loan deal.
Manchester City were also offered the opportunity to sign the winger, on several occasions, but declined to make a bid.
On Thursday Carlo Ancelotti signalled that the player was trying to force his way out of Real when the coach stated he had turned down a new contract. “Di María asked to go,” said the Italian coach said. “The player has to look for a solution. He’s a Real Madrid player and until 31 August, as I’ve already said, anything can happen.”
United have so far offered only a no comment but are refusing to deny the club’s firm interest in Di María. This signals the club’s hope to complete the deal before the close of the summer transfer window on 1 September.
Di María could be handed the No7 shirt, with United having previously indicated in a tweet on 13 August that any fresh arrivals would be given jerseys already “vacant”. The club tweeted: “Please note: any new acquisitions will be handed shirt numbers that are currently vacant.#mufc.”
Should Di María sign, it would represent United’s highest-profile acquisition since Robin van Persie in August 2012 and a coup for Old Trafford. The club have endured yet another difficult summer window, mirroring a similar experience last year.
In Di María, Van Gaal will be adding one of Europe’s elite performers who was the man of the match in Real’s Champions League triumph in May and who, but for injury, would have been a certain starter in Argentina’s World Cup final against Germany at Brazil 2014.
Van Gaal is determined to persist with the 3-5-2 formation he has used this season and may decide to deploy Di María as a wing-back, which is in line with his regular position as a wide operator, or try to move him inside.
For his proposed system, Van Gaal wants players of pace and the 63-year-old is conscious that Di María possesses an attacking threat that would be a potent force against Premier League defences. Before Real’s Uefa Super Cup meeting with Atlético Madrid in Cardiff this month, Van Gaal described Di María as a winger of the “highest level”.
With United having suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Swansea City in their season opener at Old Trafford Di María’s potential arrival would provide a welcome boost.
Van Gaal is still hopeful of signing at least one more player, and retains an interest in Ajax’s Daley Blind, who can play as a left-sided defender or as a defensive midfielder.
This is an area of the manager’s squad which is particularly weak due to injury and a lack of high-quality personnel. If Blind – or any other midfielder – was to arrive this would throw further doubt on Tom Cleverley’s future at the club.

To forestall a breakdown of law and order, the Ogun State Government has directed the Governing Council of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, to close down the institution immediately.
According to a statement signed by Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa, Secretary to State Government, the decision to shut the university was taken in the overall interest of peace and order.
The government said students of the institution have continued to issue threats while rejecting all entreaties and concessions made by the government on their various demands concerning the recently announced reduction of school fees.
The government advised all parents whose wards are students of the university to immediately call them to order as the government will not tolerate any act that will disturb the peace being enjoyed by the people of the state.
The statement continued, “The government has done its best, but out of the 10 institutions in the state only OOU has displayed some level of violence and still plan for another soon, but the government has taken its initiative to close down the school to forestall violence in the state,” he concluded.

Lagos State Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the kidnap and murder of a 20-year-old undergraduate, identified as John Chinedu Okere. Until his death, Chinedu was a 300 level Electrical Engineering student at Covenant University, Otta in Ogun State.

Chinedu had left his parent’s house in the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2014, to a Hospital in Yaba, Lagos for medical reasons and that was the last time he was seen alive.

According to Vanguard report, the victim’s father, Jude Okere, received an SMS notifying him that Chinedu had been kidnapped and he later got a call from a hidden number who demanded N10 million ransom for the release of his son or he would be killed. They reported the case to the Divisional Police Station at Sabo, Yaba and it was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja the next day where investigations commenced.

Unfortunately, two days later, his decomposing corpse was discovered in one of the rooms at ‘DE Homes Hotel’ located in Ejigbo by one of their staff.

It was gathered from some family members that one of the friends of the deceased had called on phone earlier that morning to tell him to meet him at a hotel.

A reliable source in the hotel said on that fateful day, the prime suspect, Okorocha Michael along with another young man simply identified as Okey, checked into the hotel with the name Christian, claiming to be a youth corps member who wanted to write exams and would be there from that Wednesday to Friday and that he was expecting his cousin to join him in the hotel.

As soon as Chinedu arrived the hotel, Michael took him to the room. We don’t know what happened inside the room. However, it was later gathered that during their stay in the room, the suspect reportedly confronted the victim on some personal issues. The confrontation eventually led to a heated argument, which later led to the suspect strangulating the victim to death,” the source said.

The prime suspect, 24-year-old Okorocha Michael, a graduate of Lagos City Polytechnic, Ikeja, was later arrested in a friend’s house around Ajah area in Lagos.

The family is praying that justice prevails and the killers are brought to book.

NMA strike to end soon

 kayode-obembe3

National President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Kayode Obembe, on Wednesday, has reportedly assured the Senate President, David Mark that the 51-day old industrial action embarked upon by medical doctors across the country, would soon be called off.
Obembe was said to have given the assurance when he led members of the NMA executive to hold a closed-door meeting with the Senate President in Abuja. The meeting, which commenced in the late hours of Tuesday, lasted till the early hours of Wednesday.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Mr. Paul Mumeh, on Wednesday, gave hint of what transpired at the meeting, said to have been attended by the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan; Senator Tunde Ogbeha, as well as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe.
The statement explained that Obembe however said he would not give the exact date and time that the strike would be called off until he reported back to his members.
The NMA boss was also quoted to have described the meeting with Mark as, “very useful and successful.”
He described as incorrect “the notion in some quarters that the striking doctors abandoned the nation in this trying times of major heath challenge on account of the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease.”
He clarified that there was never a time the doctors refused to respond to the national emergency.
The NMA boss said, “Doctors were not unmindful of the health challenges faced by the nation at the moment but needed government to correct some abnormalities in the health sector to make it more effective and responsive to the health care needs of the citizens.”
He pledged to convene a stakeholders meeting soon as part of the process to put an end to the current industrial action.
Nigerian doctors embarked on the nationwide strike on July 1 following their disagreement with the Federal Government over alleged unpaid allowances.
Mumeh’s statement added that Mark reminded the doctors of the implications of the strike to the health of the citizens and that there had been indications that government had complied with a reasonable number of the doctors’ demands.
